Ulverston Parish Church has faithfully served the community since 1111 and is a beautiful Grade II listed building; the arched Norman doorway forms the link to over 900 years of continuous worship in this place.
History
The church rests below Hoad Hill with its eye-catching monument to Sir John Barrow, possibly Ulverston’s most famous son (after Stan Laurel!), who rose to be second secretary of the Admiralty and was responsible for promoting many voyages of Arctic and Antarctic discovery, as well as exploration to Timbuktu. His parents are buried in the extensive and fascinating churchyard and there is a memorial to Sir John within the church building.
Lights and Lives
The interior is a fine space with the roof supported on alternating braced collar and king-post trusses. Our Lights and Lives stained glass window tour reflects the stories of our Christian faith and heritage with the windows sending sparkling spectrums of light across the church.
Children’s Trail
Follow our indoor Heritage Trail to explore the historic monuments inside the Parish Church.
Interactive Monument Map
Look out for our online map of monuments and memorials both inside and outside the church.
Quiet Garden
The garden stands in an extensive fenced churchyard within the town which provides a biodiverse tranquil retreat and is a registered Quiet Garden. The formal gardens have won awards with Cumbria in Bloom. The surrounding biodiverse grounds include a wild-flower field, small woodland and a tree lined boundary. There is much to explore among the ancient gravestones, including many local notable families.
