Ulverston has made culinary headlines recently. The town’s Shed 1 Distillery has received a 2-star Great Taste Award for its gin, Cuckold’s Revenge, becoming one of the Great Taste winners of 2017. The recently opened Bici Café has also been the feature of a TV documentary Starting Up Starting Over, which follows the successful opening of this authentic Italian café in the town.
Shed 1 Distillery Wins 2-Star Great Taste Award
Shed 1 Distillery, Ulverston’s artisan gin maker, received a 2-star Great Taste Award for its Cuckold’s Revenge Gin. The Great Taste Award is one of the worlds most coveted food awards, celebrating the very best in food and drink.
The distillery received this great artisan accolade after being blind tasted alongside 12,366 other products. Ulverston’s very own gin distillery proved a hit with the judges for this year’s Great Taste Awards, which included top chefs, cookery writers, food critics and restaurateurs, including MasterChef judge Charles Campion and food writer Gill Meller.
Cuckold’s Revenge Gin was a tantalising treat for the judge’s taste buds, who dubbed the gin ‘Outstanding’, adding that “it offered interesting and beguiling aromatics, soft and mysterious, delivering layers of citrus and spice with a lovely warming finish”.
Shed 1 Distillery are delighted at receiving the award, responding “It’s wonderful to get this award, particularly as we only launched last year. To be such a small enterprise, quite literally working from out of our shed, and to get such a prestigious award is brilliant!” They plan to celebrate receiving the award in October to coincide with the distillery’s first anniversary, some achievement!

Bici Café Featured in TV Documentary Starting Up Starting Over
Bici Café’s Kat Allison and Gwill Baldasarre have also been showing how hard work, entrepreneurial talent and, above all, culinary skills, can pay off in business. The cafe becomes the feature of Channel 5 documentary Starting up Starting Over which follows its successful opening in Ulverston this year.
