The Environment Agency (EA), working in partnership with Cumbria County Council, SLDC, and Network Rail, are currently constructing the Town Beck Flood Alleviation Scheme, with completion due for November 2017. The flooding in this location is primarily from the overtopping of Town Beck plus surface water flooding. The work has been carried out in close collaboration with the town council, affected residents, and businesses in order to reduce, as far as is possible, the disruption in the town. This has proved difficult due to the constrained working conditions on this ancient and heavily culverted watercourse, and the EA is grateful to the residents and businesses for their cooperation during this time of disruption.
When completed, the scheme will provide protection against a flood that has a 1% chance of occurring in any one year (sometimes called a 1 in 100 year event). This is a significant improvement to the pre-scheme level of protection.
