Swarthmoor Hall (Quakers)

Swarthmoor Hall (Quakers) has been described as a hidden gem. The historic, peaceful and beautiful setting of the Hall provides a very special environment whatever the purpose of your visit or stay.

The hall’s gardens and grounds are set in 130 acres of farmland with views to neighbouring fells and the distinctive ‘Hoad Monument’ above the town of Ulverston. They are beautiful, peaceful and varied. The grounds encompass formal gardens, including a quiet garden which has been developed as a place for meditation, reflection and outdoor Quaker worship. A new courtyard garden features a Living Quilt, a copy of a quilt on the bed in the Fells’ bedroom.

The quiet garden gives a wheelchair-accessible hard route through to the meadow from the east side garden.

A variety of courses are offered at Swarthmoor Hall, both provided by Swarthmoor and delivered in partnership with Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre. Our programme is divided into three categories:

  • Woodbrooke at Swarthmoor Hall – courses, workshops and retreats
  • Swarthmoor Hall, the place and its history – workshops, pilgrimages and special events linked to its heritage
  • Swarthmoor Hall for the Quaker community locally and across our region – events, workshops and projects

The Barn Café at Swarthmoor Hall is surrounded by beautiful countryside yet is only minutes away from Ulverston town centre.

Our aim?  To serve wonderful local food and recapture the hall’s centuries old reputation for hospitality.  It is why we’ve sourced delicious breads, cakes, pastries, and savoury dishes from amongst the best suppliers in Cumbria, including Jumping Jenny and the Fat Flour Bakery.

Come and visit us for coffee, tea and cake, or a light lunch.

Find out more about our Summer Menu here.

Opening hours are 10.30am – 4.30pm every day of the week.
