Ford Park

The Park is a nine-acre green space with open fields, woodland and mature gardens surrounding the Grade II listed buildings. There is a state-of-the-art Natural Playground, Nature Trail with Butterfly Mound and Woodland Walkway and an entry level Orienteering Course. The mature gardens, orchard and Kitchen Garden have been tended by volunteers over the years to bring them back to somewhere near their former glory. This has been a labour of love which continues to this day.

A way-marked path takes you on a short walk around the grounds providing information about the wildlife that is found in Ford Park.

There are a number of interpretation boards covering birds, bats, trees and butterflies and an interactive sensory board plus a short activity within the leaflet.

The Kitchen Garden includes original nineteenth century features such as the Fernery where ferns and aspidistras would have been grown for the family house. Regular gardening days on Tuesdays and Thursdays (weather permitting), plus occasional Community Gardening days, ensure that the kitchen garden is very productive and open for everyone to visit and enjoy.

Ford Park is open to the public at all times.

Nature Trail

A way-marked path takes you on a short walk around the grounds providing information about the wildlife that is found in Ford Park.

There are a number of interpretation boards covering birds, bats, trees and butterflies and an interactive sensory board plus a short activity within our Nature Trail leaflet. The trail has been developed with input from Cumbria Wildlife Trust and our volunteers, who are essential to the maintenance of the property.

Copies of the leaflet can be collected from the Cafe or download from our website.

Kitchen Garden

Following extensive refurbishment funded by the Big Lottery Local Food programme, the Kitchen Garden has been developed as a community project to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs for the cafe with the aim of providing a “dish a day” and educational opportunities for everyone. Regular workshops and 1:1 learning opportunities are provided by our gardener.
