Winning the Campaign For Real Ale’s ‘Pub of the Year’ award is a fantastic achievement. However, the Old Friends pub has now won this award for the second time running! It’s evident that to win this award requires dedication to CAMRA’s cause, and the Old Friends has pledged their allegiance, brought the real ale cavalry and charged ahead, winning this highly sought after award year after year. If you’ve not happened to be a patron of this much loved pub, run by real ale passionate couple Graham and Andrea, you’ve been missing out!
So, what is it about the Old Friends that makes it a destination for real ale enthusiasts? Is having a fantastic selection of real ales from amazing breweries all it takes to bring this award home? We would have to suggest that as much as the above is a major factor in winning this award, there is definitely more to this pub than ales (although they’re pretty awesome).
A call into the Old Friends provides visitors with the opportunity to try a pint or two (or three, who’s counting) from a variety of independent and British breweries, many from our own Cumbrian county, including six that are brewed on-site at the Old Friends – this alone provides a fantastic opportunity for any ale fan to quiz a man about his hops. Enjoy yours either by the open fire, socialising at the bar or in the rather lovely beer garden, a great place to enjoy the sunshine, or on chillier visits, under the covers with the heaters on.
It’s this type of home from home atmosphere created by Graham and Andrea, that makes enjoying these amazing real ales all the better.
