Knowing Your Place: Ideas of the North in Words and Music

From the Viking invasion of Lindisfarne to the dismantling of Millom Ironworks, words and music weave haematite veins of the North across time & space. The result is a hybridised land- and seascape, dripping with the quicksilver brack of estuaries, and earthed by plumb line eons of geological time, seemingly unfathomable but known somewhere in the pits of our stomachs and quarries.

This unique programme is a rich tapestry of the ways in which people have interacted with the North over the last two millennia – industrially, creatively, spiritually, politically. It in turn invites you to consider how you might too come to know your place.

With words & music by Neil Curry, Norman Nicholson, Edvard Grieg, Hildegard of Bingen and Joel Rust.

Neil Curry, poet
Jess Dandy, contralto
Anthony Hewitt, piano

Join the performers at 11.30am, before the concert for an informal, informative, introductory talk about the underlying themes that connect the music and words, as well as a discussion around contemporary composer Joel Rust’s work “Fossils’, commissioned by Jess Dandy. There will be a short Q&A to conclude.
